Ravangla and the Ravang Monastery

Ravangla is a small town located at the base of Maenam Hill at an altitude of about 7,000 feet (2,133 meters). It provides spectacular panoramic views of West Sikkim dotted with famous monasteries of Old Ralang, Pemayangtse, Tashiding and Sangachoeling.

It serves as a gateway to various attractions in South and West Sikkim and is a transit point for trekkers to Borong and Maenam Hill.

It is also possible to take short nature trails in the vicinity of Ravangla like the trek to Shar Chok Bhepu cave considered to be one of the most holiest caves in Sikkim.

The nearby Ravang Monastery bustles with festivities during the Pang Lhabsol festival when locals perform the Warrior Dance.

Another fascinating monastery about 5.5 kilometers (3.4 miles) from Ravangla is the Bon Monastery called Yung Drung Kundrak Lingbon. The Bon faith is believed to be the oldest traditional religion of Tibet and teaches respect for nature. When Indian Buddhism spread in Tibet, many Bon faith facets were adapted resulting in the distinct religion of Tibetan Buddhism. This is the only Bon Monastery in Sikkim.
