Yumthang is at 11,800 feet (3,596 meters) and is about 140 kilometers (87 miles) away from Gangtok. Yumthang is known as the ‘Enchanting Valley Of Flowers” and rightly so, especially during spring time when riotously colorful wild flowers like primulae and rhododendron carpets the entire valley.

A hot spring renowned for its healing powers is located on the right side of the Yumthang river. This hot spring is dingy and grimy so a dip is best avoided.

At a walkable distance of about 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) up north is the Shiv Mandir. A drive or a trek there is recommended.

Further up about 16 kilometers (10 miles) away is Yumesamdong at 16,000 feet (4,877 meters). This area provides spectacular views of the rugged terrain devoid of vegetation. Recommended months for visit are November-December and February-March.

Yumthang is also home to the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary that spans across an area of 43 square kilometers. The sanctuary has 24 different species of rhododendron flowers that are in full bloom between the months of March and May. Apart from the flora, the sanctuary is also home to mammals and birds like goral, serow, red panda, Himalayan black bear, musk deer, blood pheasant, snow patridge, blackbirds, snow finches and migratory ducks.
