Phodong is a brief stopover, usually for lunch, on the way to other destinations like Mangan and Singhik of North Sikkim. It is about 40 kilometers (25 miles) away from Gangtok.

A 15-20 minutes downhill walk from the 39th kilometer milestone leads to the Phodong Monastery which is one of the major monasteries of Sikkim. This monastery was constructed by Chogyal (Monarch) Gyurmed Namgyal (the 4th Ruler of Sikkim; Born:1707, Died:1734) during the first quarter of the eighteenth century and completed around 1740.

This monastery is of the Karma Kagyud Sect of Tibetan Buddhism and is well-known for the beautiful mural paintings on its inner walls plus a large statute of the 9th Karmapa. It holds religious dances during the 28th and 29th days of the 10th Month of the Tibetan Lunar Calendar.
