Lachung is a village at an elevation of 8,600 feet (2,621 meters) and is approximately 124 kilometers (77 miles) from Gangtok on the way to Yumthang.

This village spans on both sides of the river Lachung Chu and has managed to retain its unique culture and tradition despite the trend towards modernization. Lachung has its own unique self-governing body called the Dzumsa which substitutes the traditional Gram Panchayat system. This little hamlet is enclosed within rock-faced valley walls with flowing waterfalls.

The Lachung Monastery or Lachung Gompa built in 1880 and is on the slope opposite the highway. It is the main center of activity for all religious celebrations of the villagers. The Lachung Gompa with its two giant prayer wheels has colorful murals with one wall retaining the original paintings. A spectacular view of the Lachung Gompa can be enjoyed from the Katao Road (Sanchok side) across the Yumthang River that can be crossed using a metal bridge.

A relatively nearby attraction is Mt. Katao which is 30 kilometers (18.5 miles) away. This is only open to Indian tourists.
