Lachen

Lachen literally means ‘big pass’ and is at an elevation of about 9,000 feet (2,750 meters). This small town is about 123 kilometers (81 miles) from Gangtok en route to Thangu, Guru Dongmar Lake or Tso Lhamu (the source of the river Teesta).

This once rustic town with traditional colorful houses built atop stone slabs is being transformed slowly but surely into a town with concrete housing.

Lachen serves as the base camp for most mountaineering expeditions to the newly opened mountain peaks of Sikkim including Green Lake and Zemu Glacier at the foot of Mt. Kanchenjunga (Mt. Khangchendzonga). Normally, these treks require expensive permits and advanced planning.

The Lachen Monastery or Lachen Gompa atop the village provides a panoramic view of the surrounding hills. This charming two-storied Gompa has colorful murals adorning its walls.
