Labrang Monastery

Labrang means the ‘dwelling place of the lamas’. Labrang Monastery or Labrang Gompa was built in 1884 and is about a kilometer away from the Phodong Monastery. Between these two monasteries lies the Tumlong Palace Ruins, the 3rd capital of Sikkim for a period of 90 years at the start of the 19th Century.

Labrang Monastery is tranquil and serene. This rustic monastery of the Nyingmapa Order of Tibetan Buddhism has an unusual shape of an octagon built on a green plateau overlooking a scenic landscape. The prayerhall with murals of Guru Padmasambhava in 1022 exact poses and a fearsome deity upstairs with a garland of severed heads are some of the highlights of this monastery. The 16th Karmapa resided at this monastery after he fled Tibet before being installed at the Rumtek Monastery.
