Guru Dongmar Lake and Tso Lhamu
Gurudongmar Lake at an elevation of 17,100 feet (5,148 meters) is one of the highest lakes in the world and is truly a sight to behold. This lake lies on a high plateau that is adjacent to the Tibetan Plateau towards the north of the Khangchengyao Range, close to the Indo-China border at a distance of approximately 190 kilometers (118 miles) from Gangtok.
This milky white lake is one of the most sacred lakes in Sikkim to both Buddhists and Hindus. According to legend, the Guru Rimpoche also known as Guru Padmasambhava, the patron saint of Sikkim touched and blessed the lake while on his way to Tibet. This is the reason that the lake is named after the saint, who was also known as Guru Dongmar. The lake except for the small part supposedly blessed blessed by the Guru remains completely frozen during the winter season.
Tso Lhamu Lake is approximately 9 kilometers (5.5 miles) from Gurudongmar Lake. It is at an elevation of about 16,730 feet (5,099 meters). This lake is the source of the river Teesta and has beautiful natural surroundings of mountains.
